I’m ready for another great week in reading class!
Monthly Reading Reflection Due: March 10th
We will be going to the library this week, so please remind your child to return their books on Tuesday. Third quarter button day is quickly approaching.
I wanted to say thank you for supporting your child with the 30 Book Challenge. Here are some fun facts about the challenge (so far).
30 Book Challenge Fun Facts
- Third grade has recorded over 1,000 books read.
- I have passed out over 500 buttons to students who have completed a genre.
The students have grown so much since those early days when they were just trying to understand what genres were and where they were located in the library. Now it’s amazing to see them take ownership of their reading every week as they choose new books.
Arizona Coyote Reading Program
Just a reminder that students should be reading at least 20 minutes every day and recording those minutes in their Coyote log. One of the best ways to help your child be successful on the AZMerit reading test is to make sure they are completing their 20 minute reading every day. It does make a huge difference.
Word Masters Challenge
This past week’s analogy was: year : decade :: penny : dime. Our winner was Michael!
Last week students reviewed the words they had learned so far in the Word Wise Challenge. Be sure to check their binder to see their work.
Lunch Bunch Book Club with Mrs. Thompson
Each week, the lunch bunch group reads two new books and votes on the one that should move on in our March Book Madness bracket. This year’s books center around the theme of being bold and brave.
Last week’s group read, Rescue and Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship and I Will Be Fierce. The group overwhelming voted for Rescue and Jessica to move on to round 2. This week’s group will be reading Nobody Likes a Goblin and Penguin Flies Home.
What We Have Been Up To:
Figurative Language: Alliteration
We added alliteration to our Figurative Language chart located in our binder. Students will be creating their own alliterations about themselves.
Students will be receiving new paired passages to be reading and analyzing in their binder. We will continue to focus on reading critically while using evidence to support our answers to comprehension questions.
Two of the biggest challenges I see third grade students struggling with include the following:
- reading directions carefully
- finding the evidence in the story to support their answers
Students must be reading carefully to fully understand not only the story, but also the questions that they’re being asked to answer. For your reference, these passages should be behind the skills tab in their binder.
- Readbox is open Tuesday-Wednesday during recess
- Tuesday – Library Day
- Wednesday – Lunch Bunch Book Club with Mrs. Thompson
Upcoming Reading Dates:
- March 10th – February Reading Reflection Due
- March 13th – Third Quarter Button Day
