Monthly Reading Reflection
Every student should have received their new January Reading Reflection last week. It should be located behind the Reflection tab in their binder.
This assignment is worth 25 points, so please review the rubric with your child (it should be in their binder) to make sure everything is included before turning it in. Just a reminder that each question on the rubric is different. Also, we will be going to the library on Tuesday to check out new books.
Arizona Coyote Reading Program
As of December 31st, third grade has read a total of 184,967 minutes!! While our December total minutes were down compared to November, I know that we will make-up for it in January. Just a reminder that students daily reading homework is to be reading at least 20 minutes a day. Those minutes should be recorded in their Coyote reading log.
Our top December readers from each homeroom class were: Camille, Natalie, Liam and Leyton. They read for a combined total of 8,210 minutes! Great job guys!
Comprehension: Compare and Contrast
Last week, we read two articles from ReadWorks, “The Pool” and “Li Bing and the Flooding” Before we began comparing and contrasting these stories, we had to determine the main idea and the author’s purpose for each of these texts. Recognizing and understanding these skills help students compare and contrast the stories better, which leads to improved comprehension.
This week, students will be finishing the comprehension questions that go with these texts. Of course, answering the questions is only one part to completing this assignment. Here are a few other requirements:
- highlighting or underlining where they found the answer in the stories
- marking what they highlighted with the corresponding question number.
- writing their answers in complete sentences
Figurative Langauge: Metaphors
This week, we will continue our focus on metaphors. Metaphors make a comparison between two things that aren’t alike but do have something in common.
