Reading Update: Jan. 6th – 10th

Happy New Year! I’m looking forward to a great 2nd semester in reading!

Monthly Reading Reflection

Students will be receiving the new January Reflection this week. It’s due on February 4th. This assignment is worth 25 points, so please review the rubric with your child (it should be in their binder) to make sure everything is included before turning it in. Just a reminder that each question on the rubric is different. Also, we will be going to the library on Tuesday to check out new books.

Winter Book Exchange Thank You

Thank you to everyone who donated and helped with the Winter Book Exchange. I hope the students had fun reading some new books over the the break. My goal is to do at least one more of these before the end of the year.

Arizona Coyote Reading Program

The December Coyote minutes are due this Thursday, January 9th. Please add your child’s total minutes for the month and sign for verification. Thank you for encouraging your child with their daily reading minutes.

Curriculum Focus:

Comprehension: Compare and Contrast

This week we will be reading paired texts from Read Works. We will be comparing and contrasting two stories as we determine the main idea and the author’s purpose for writing them. These stories will be kept in their reading binder behind the skills tab.

Figurative Langauge: Metaphors

This week our focus is metaphors. Metaphors make a comparison between two things that aren’t alike but do have something in common. An example: Mary’s eyes were fireflies.

This Week:

  • Tuesday – Library Day
  • Thursday – December Coyote Minutes Due

Upcoming Reading Dates:

  • January 16th – Reading Test
  • Feb. 4th – January Reading Reflection Due

Happy Reading!
